What to Expect on a Float or Wade Trip
A guided trip with Durango Fly Fishing on the Animas River delivers an authentic Colorado fly fishing experience, whether you book a four-hour half-day trip or an eight-hour full-day adventure. From productive runs through town to quieter stretches of river, you’ll fish alongside a seasoned local guide who knows the Animas River inside and out.
Expect hands-on instruction tailored to your skill level — from refining your cast and improving your drift to understanding seasonal hatches and reading water. Our goal is simple: help you become a better angler while putting you in position to catch fish.
On a float trip, you’ll cover more water and work through a variety of riffles, seams, and deeper holding runs while enjoying views of the San Juan Mountains and historic Durango, Colorado.

Float Trip
Float trips are ideal for anglers who want variety, mobility, and the chance to target quality brown and rainbow trout throughout changing water types. On the Animas River, we offer a scenic valley float through the Oxbow section — beautiful stretch of water that’s perfect for anglers looking for a relaxed pace and classic Southwest Colorado scenery.
Wade Trip
A wade trip offers a more technical, hands-on approach. Your guide will select prime access points along the Animas River and tailor the day to your goals — whether that’s dialing in nymphing techniques, targeting rising trout, or improving your overall fly fishing skills.
Please Note: The Animas River is a freestone fishery, which means it's subject to changing conditions throughout the year. While wade fishing is often productive in most seasons, high flows from snowmelt or rain can occasionally make the river unfishable. In the event of poor conditions, your trip may be moved to the San Juan River to ensure a quality experience on the water.
What to Bring on Your Guided Fishing Trip

-
Fishing License: A valid Colorado fishing license is required. You can purchase one online through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
-
Clothing: Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Dress in layers, and bring a long-sleeve sun shirt, hat, polarized sunglasses, and a light jacket or rain shell.
-
Footwear: Sturdy wading boots or footwear with good grip are important — the Animas is a freestone river with uneven terrain.
-
Sunscreen: High-altitude sun can be intense. Apply sunscreen before your trip and bring extra for reapplying throughout the day.
-
Camera or Phone: The Animas offers some beautiful photo ops — from wild trout to views of the San Juan Mountains and historic Durango.
-
Water and Snacks: We provide lunch and beverages on full-day trips, but feel free to bring extra water or snacks to keep yourself comfortable.
-
Personal Items: Bring anything else you might need for the day, such as medications, lip balm, or a small pack to keep essentials close by.
A guided trip on the Animas River offers a true Durango fly fishing experience — wild trout, mountain views, and local water. Whether you're floating a scenic stretch or wading technical runs, our trips are designed to put you on fish and make the most of your time on the river.
