What to Expect on Your Full Day Float Trip

A full day on the San Juan Lower River — known as the Lower 9 — with Durango Fly Fishing offers a different pace than the classic tailwater above. This is an eight-hour drift boat trip on a fully private stretch of river, where we put in early and take out later in the day to make the most of the water. You’ll spend the day casting to banks, working riffles, and covering long, productive runs in search of healthy brown and rainbow trout.

Unlike the upper river, the Lower 9 is all boat-based fishing. We stay in the drift boat all day, including lunch, allowing us to steadily work downstream without interruption. Some days the fish come easy; other days we put in the work — adjusting patterns, changing angles, and staying methodical. With far less pressure and wide-open scenery, it’s a beautiful, quiet float that rewards anglers who enjoy covering water and fishing hard.
