Durango Fly Fishing Trip

Fishing report for San Juan River below Navajo Dam & Animas River in Durango, CO

San Juan River – Quality Waters:Flows are fluctuating between 335 and 350 CFS, and fishing has remained consistent. Mayflies are coming off early in the day and again heavily in the evenings, while midges continue to produce throughout. You'll find plenty of suspended fish in the slower water—think long, light rigs with small black or grey midge pupa and dark baetis nymphs. In faster seams and riffles, go heavier to get down. Fish have been active in both zones, especially near structure and drop-offs.

San Juan River – Bait Water:The bait section was fishing well yesterday, with light midge and baetis rigs producing plenty of takes. Nice browns have been stacking up in riffles and are actively feeding on mayflies. With a lot of grass growing along the weed beds, short nymph rigs have been effective and manageable. There’s also been a solid dry fly window—caddis are bouncing around, baetis are coming off, and a few happy risers are making for a fun topwater game.

Animas River – Durango, CO:The Animas is currently running high and dirty, with flows peaking over 2600 CFS today. It’s still in runoff mode, but once it drops and begins to clear, it’s going to be on fire. The Animas River Valley will offer some great float opportunities, and float trips through town should be nothing short of epic once the river shapes up.
