Animas River Fishing Report – March 24, 2025 | Brought to you by Durango Fly Fishing

Spring is creeping in here in Durango, and the weather has been absolutely beautiful — and the fish are happy! The Animas River is waking up, and now is a great time to hit the water before runoff kicks in.

Mornings are still chilly, so fishing “junk” flies like eggs, mop flies, or worms paired with a small midge larva can be very productive early on. Streamers fished low and slow are also a solid bet, especially when it's overcast.

As the day warms up, midge pupa and baetis nymphs become increasingly important. Keep an eye out for mid-day hatches and some solid action just before sundown. On cloudy days, streamer fishing has been effective throughout the day, while sunny days are best fished early and late.

Caddis larva are always present in the Animas and are a reliable go-to pattern year-round.

Flies that are producing:

  • Black or red Zebra Midges

  • Top Secret Midges

  • RS2s

  • Chocolate Thunder

  • WD-40s

As spring progresses and the water starts to get a little color, expect streamers to become king. Fish tend to feed heavily leading into runoff, making this one of the best times of the year to target big trout on the Animas.
